The Capturing Our Wayland Heritage project was officially
launched on 20th February 2009 by the Bishop of Norwich,
the Rt Rev Graham James. The launch of the project was accompanied
by an exhibition of research and images by heritage groups from
Ashill, Griston, Thompson, Merton, Saham Toney, Scoulton and
Watton that are already working in the area. It was a
very well attended day and it got the project of to a very
good start.
• ‘Capturing our Wayland Heritage’ aims to explore,
record and celebrate Wayland’s unique cultural and landscape
heritage, leaving a legacy for generations to come.
• The project will work with the local community and schools,
learning and sharing knowledge and providing support, activities
and training. It will also help set up new heritage groups where
they do not already exist.
• Topics to be explored include: landscape history, archaeology,
myths, buildings, oral & family history, trades, crafts,
fairs, sport, traditions, farming, ‘Battle Area’,
airfields, transport, religion, food and fashion.
• The results of the project will be shared with the community
and visitors to the area, through a range of different media;
leaflet, book, exhibition, on-site interpretation, website,
artwork and DVD.
• Revealing and promoting Wayland’s hidden heritage will
help to protect it for the future, and aid the local economy
by encouraging more tourism in the area.
