Farmers Market...

Background

The Wayland Farmers Market was introduced in July 2000 following consultation with Farmers and food producers in the area. Initially a pilot scheme, its success brought lottery and Market Town Initiative Funding to pay for market stalls and to join the National Association of Farmers Markets and apply for certification. While the market is supported by the Wayland Partnership, it is managed by a team of hardworking volunteers who ensure that the stalls are erected and dismantled and returned to their barn each month.

Details

The market is held in Watton High Street on the first Saturday of each month except January and operates within strict guidelines. All goods sold must have been grown, reared, baked, brewed or crafted by the stall holder or a member of his family and all operate within the rules laid down by Trading Standards and Environmental Health and are licensed to trade on the High Street by Breckland Council. The market is inspected by the Soil Association each year in order to maintain its certificate. The Wayland Market is one of only three certificated markets in Norfolk – the others are Aylsham and Acle. Many of the stall holders have been with the market from the outset. As at January 2008 the site fee for stall holders is £10 which covers the cost of licensing, the transportation and repair of stalls and the FARMA membership and certification. This may need to be reviewed as costs increase.

Awards

Over the years the market has won a number of awards. In 2003 it won the ‘Best Market Town project in the East of England’ award and was runner up in the EDP Norfolk Food Awards, which we then won in both 2004 and 2006. The market features in a number of Good Practice Guides both regionally and nationally.
